Masking
A coating is only as good as the surfaces it does not touch. Our precision masking ensures threads stay clean, bores remain true, and every critical dimension stays within spec — even after a 400°F cure cycle.

Selective Coating
One misplaced speck of powder in a threaded hole can scrap an entire aerospace part. We do not let that happen.
Why Masking Is Non-Negotiable
Powder coating fuses to metal at the molecular level. That is its superpower — but it is also why unprotected surfaces are so difficult to fix after the fact. Once powder cures inside a threaded hole, on a bearing surface, or across a mating flange, removal requires re-blasting, re-machining, or scrapping the part entirely.
At Sundial, masking is not an afterthought. It is engineered into every job. Our technicians review prints, identify critical surfaces, and select the right combination of tapes, plugs, stencils, and films to protect what matters — so your parts go together exactly as designed after coating.
Masking Methods We Use
High-Temp Tape
Specially formulated silicone and polyimide tapes that withstand 400°F+ cure cycles without adhesive residue. Ideal for threads, bores, and sharp edges.
Custom Stencils
Laser-cut stencils create logos, part numbers, decorative patterns, and branding elements with crisp edges and repeatable placement.
Plug & Cap Systems
Silicone and EPDM plugs in hundreds of sizes seal holes, ports, and tubing to keep powder out of internal passages and threaded features.
Protective Sheeting
High-temperature films and masks cover large flat areas, complex curves, and assemblies that need selective coating on specific zones only.
What We Mask
- Threads and tapped holes
- Bearing surfaces and bores
- Electrical grounding points
- Mating flanges and seals
- Logo plates and branding areas
- Critical tolerance dimensions
Getting It Right
The key to perfect masking is precision and meticulous attention to detail. It is important to carefully apply masking materials so only the intended surfaces are exposed. If powder coating gets on areas that should not be coated, it can be difficult to remove and may result in a poor finish or scrapped part.
At Sundial, we have years of experience in powder coating masking across aerospace, automotive, architectural, and military projects. We help you select the right masking strategy and apply it with the accuracy your parts demand.
